Follow the road through a short tunnel in the rock and you’ll find yourself in the historic little town of Montagu – not technically part of the Robertson Wine Valley, but close enough and quaint enough to warrant a visit. Mimosa Lodge has been around since 1985, and for the past 13 years Bernard and Fida Hess have built up a reputation for tasty old-style, bistro food. Think scallops with home-made sweet chilli sauce, perfectly seared steak, or ostrich fillet with pommes fondant and muscat-and-thyme jus. Tuck into a three-course menu for R320 (R620 with wine pairing). Mimosa also produces its own wines, which you’ll soon be able to taste at a dedicated tasting facility with an attached day-time restaurant.

Twenty five new restaurants get the nod for this year’s American Express® Platinum Fine Dining Awards
SA’s Premier dining awards reveals the country’s 100 exceptional restaurants

12 September 2016 – American Express® has revealed the country’s most coveted culinary list, the American Express Platinum Fine Dining Awards, at a chic event held in Johannesburg.

Johannesburg’s hottest new restaurant, Marble, was the location for South Africa’s premier dining awards ceremony as American Express, paid tribute to the chefs and restaurants that are changing the game in the pursuit of delivering the perfect culinary experience.

Mimosa was a huge fine dining hit! I was completely blown away by the really spectacular food! We arrived a little early and had drinks by the pool.  Mimosa hosts a lovely four course menu which changes based on seasonality and availability promising everything is fresh and delicious! Whilst it was a wonderful dinner I did find it a little pricey at R450 per person before wine. Luckily it is actually six courses including a lovely amuse bouche and sorbet palate cleanser!

I was really impressed by the starter of seared tuna with a cabbagge and basil salad, aioli, fresh coriander, crispy leeks and teriyaki sauce. The slightly seared giant chunks of rich butter tuna were an absolute treat paired with the buttery cabbage. Before main course we enjoyed a lovely rooibos sorbet as an palate cleanser which prefectly prepared us for the highlight of the evening!

As I am busy finalising my schedule for my annual trip to Switzerland, I think of all the wonderful events we’ve had in previous years.
And how far Mimosa Lodge & Mimosa Wines has come in the last 10 years.  The lodge is as busy as ever and Mimosa Wines is finally realising our dream to have a fully equipped wine tasting facility and day-restaurant for you, our special guests.
